Media Diet: November 2023

Hard to believe that the end of the year is almost here and that I have only one more media diet post of 2023 to write! I’ve started reflecting on the things I’m grateful for this year. It’s been much easier to put together with a year of media diets to reflect upon!

🎭 Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street - I enjoyed the 2007 film adaptation but never saw the original stage production. I loved it; it was my favorite show on my trip to New York! (A+)

🎥 Philomena - I was listening to an interview with Steve Coogan and realized I had never seen this! I had no idea it had won an Oscar, either. Enjoyed it and continue to love Coogan! (A)

📺 Gen V Season 1 - I’ve enjoyed The Boys but went into this with very low expectations. Was pleasantly surprised! Can’t wait to see what they do in the next season. (A-)

🎥 The Batman - I’ve watched so few DC movies in the last few years, but a friend convinced me to try it. Enjoyed it! Hope they make more DC films like this. (A)

🎥 Quiz Lady - Pretty underwhelming after all the positive reviews. Barely paid attention to it. (B-)

📺 Still Up Season 1 - I love British comedy shows and enjoyed this! (A-)

🎥 Gone Girl - Always enjoyable to rewatch! Still holds up time and time again. (A-)

📺 Upright Season 1 and 2 - Continuing my catch-up of Tim Minchin shows and movies I’ve missed. Loved seeing a young Milly Alcock! (A)

📚 The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty - I sometimes found it hard to get into. Still, I loved reading a series set in a very different part of the world than is usual for a fantasy book. (A-)

📺 Our Flag Means Death Season 2 - Continues to be an incredible series. Just as good as season 1. (A)

🎥 A Haunting in Venice - Didn’t enjoy the previous film, “Death on the Nile”, but this is a return to form. It’s not as good as “Murder on the Orient Express,” but it’s still a great watch! (B+)

📺 Brawn: The Impossible Formula 1 Story - I’ve slowly been getting more into F1, thanks to Drive to Survive and some friends who follow it. I don’t know much about past seasons, so this watch was great! (A)

📚 System Collapse by Martha Wells - Murderbot Diaries continues to be my favorite modern Sci-fi series. (A)

📺 Lessons in Chemistry - Great adaptation of the book, but it feels like it could have been 2 episodes longer. Ends way too abruptly. (A-)

📚 Defiant by Brandon Sanderson - The Skyward Series has ups and downs, but I enjoyed this finale. (A-)

🎥 Next Goal Wins (2014) - The documentary that the new 2023 film is based on. It’s a must-see for a soccer fan. (A+)

📚 Bookshops & Bonedust by Travis Baldree - A fun prequel to Legends & Lattes, which I loved! Hope we get more books in this universe. (A)
