Media Diet: August 2024
It’s hard to believe that the summer is already come to an end, it just flew by. A slow start with a lot of cool and rainy weather made it feel like a shorter summer than usual. Hopefully our good weather continues to hold through September and we can enjoy it a bit longer.
📺 The Bear Season 3 - A massive change in pace for the series, with some deeply introspective episodes showcasing different characters. It didn’t hit the same way as previous seasons, but I still loved it. (A-)
📺 Under the Bridge - Based on a true story and set in British Columbia, but I had never heard about it before! It’s hard to watch, at times, for how cruel kids can be to each other. (B+)
📚 Under the Skin by Michel Faber - Suggested at my book club and was what the Under the Skin (2013) film was based on. It was very different from the film, but I enjoyed it. Very unsettling read. (A-)
📚 Tell No One by Harlan Coben - Wanted something light and engaging to read while camping and have a friend who loves the Coben series. Picked this up and it lived up to its reputation of a light & wild ride. (B+)
📚 Fool Me Once by Harlan Coben - Continued the Coben train while camping but this one was a let down. Twists were too similar to the last book. (C+)
📺 Motherland Season 2 - Continuing to thoroughly enjoy the series. Perfect light distraction show. (A)
🎥 Fly Me to the Moon - What a snoozefest of a film. There was no chemistry between the cast, the plot was boring, and I kept getting distracted during it. (C)
🎥 Rye Lane - One of my favorite romantic comedies of the last decade. A must watch. (A+)
📚 The Mercy of Gods by James S. A. Corey - A new series from the authors of The Expanse. Had a hard time getting into it. I may try the next book, but this one didn’t do it for me. (C+)
🎥 Inside Out (Rewatch) - It continues to be one of the best Pixar films of the last decade. (A)
🎥 Inside Out 2 - Not as good as the original but a worthy addition to the universe. If you enjoyed the first one it’s definitely worth the watch. (B+)
📚 Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver - Suggested to me by my partner, and wow, what a fantastic novel. So incredibly hard to read at points but you connect deeply with the characters. Will be thinking about this book for years to come. (A+)
📚 We Are Legion (We Are Bob) by Dennis Taylor - It has been an excellent month for reading, and I loved finishing it off with the Bobiverse series. Thoughtful while still being light and entertaining. I’m going to continue to fly through this series. (A)
