Summer has been absolutely flying by, and Vancouver finally got hot in July! I enjoyed some adventures off to Victoria, a few days in Cupertino for an Apple event, and then a lovely week in Berkeley. I wrapped up the month with some backcountry camping, where I got a lot of reading done.

🎥 The Map of Tiny Perfect Things - Simple little rom-com. Not too memorable, but it was a good watch. (B)

📚 The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo - I loved Bardugo’s Grishaverse book series, but I haven’t been enjoy her Alex Stern series. Glad she has branched out with something new. It was very different from what she’s written before, which I appreciated! (A-)

📚 Baby X by Kira Peikoff - Fun DNA based caper crossed with a bit of a love story. Good quick read. (A-)

📺 Motherland Season 1 - Reminds me of CBC’s Workin’ Moms but with an English twist. Looking forward to watching the rest of the series. (A)

🎥 Twister - I rewatched the original, which I don’t think I’ve seen since the early 2000s. It was alright, but it didn’t hold up. (B)

🎥 Twisters - After the Twister rewatch my expectations were even lower for Twisters. I really enjoyed it though! It was a fun summer film. Daisy Edgar-Jones is incredible as always. (A-)

📚 Someone You Can Build a Nest In by John Wiswell - Overall, I enjoyed it, it had some weird pacing problems. (B+)

🎥 The Bikeriders - I do not understand the love for this film. Absolute snoozefest. (C)

🎥 Deadpool 2 - Rewatch in preparation for the new film! Still holds up well (A-)

🎥 Deadpool and Wolverine - As someone who has seen every “legacy” Marvel film, this was the perfect goodbye to that era of comic book films. Brought back memories of seeing Elektra in theatres in Toronto on a hot summer day and having it just be me and my friends in the movie theatre. (A)

📺 The Jetty Season 1 - Great to see Jenna Coleman get to do a role with lots of range. It’s a decent British detective mini-series but nothing mind-blowing. (B)

🎥 Copa 71 - Documentary looking at the original Woman’s World Cup with the depressing insight of how the players were treated at the time. (B+)

📚 Annie Bot by Sierra Greer - Fantastic look at personhood and AI. Creepy, weird, and thoughtful all wrapped into an engaging story. (A)
